      Died: 28 June 1915
Oliver Cusack was born on 9 Feb 1895 in Littleton, Thurles, Co. Tipperary the son of Thomas Cusack, a police officer and Margaret Hanly. He had three siblings: Mary M, Michael John, and Catherine. At the 1901 census Oliver was living with his family in the Royal Irish Constabulary Barracks, Cappalahan, Tipperary and at the 1911 census living at Clareabbey, Clare.
Oliver joined Ordnance Survey 18 August 1912 as a civilian aged 16 years 6 months. He enlisted into the Royal Engineers soon after his 18th birthday.
Oliver landed in France on 13 December 1914 he served with 11 Field Company, Royal Engineers as did his Ordnance Survey colleague Thomas Joseph Lynch who was killed in action on 15 May 1915.
Extract from unit War Diary - 15 May 1915 - Rue Du Bois "Battalions attacked in 4 lines, each consisting of one Company. Leading Companys formed up outside our parapet before time for the assault arrived. Distance to the ?? was nearly 400 yards: therefore all 4 lines were out in the open before the leading line reached German trench. Hence losses of RE and infantry."
Oliver sustained shrapnel wounds to his legs; on the 25 June 1915 his left leg was amputated whilst being treated at 13 General Hospital in Boulogne he was then evacuated to Edmonton Military Hospital in Middlesex.
Sapper Oliver Cusack, 11 Field Company, Royal Engineers died of his wounds on 28 June 1915. He is remembered on the Ordnance Survey War Memorials and the Thurles Great War Memorial. His Commonwealth War Grave is in Tottenham Cemetery.
The Battle of Aubers and the Battle of Festubert - In the 15 days covering the two battles four Ordnance Survey men were killed or mortally wounded within a few meters of the Cinder Track. Sapper Oliver Cusack, Sapper Thomas Joseph Lynch, Sapper Henry Matthew Scarff and Sapper Benjamin Stander.
