For much of its existence Ordnance Survey has been staffed by a mix of military and civilian staff. Many joined as civilians before enlisting into the Royal Engineer then returning to Ordnance Survey as civilians when their military service ended. This site is dedicated to the memory of past men and women of Ordnance Survey.
The site is (and will always be) under construction. At this point (January 2022 the site has been compiled from six main sources: 1) The Register of Ordnance Survey Staff c1890 to c1934. 2) British Army, Worldwide Index 1841, 1851, 1861, and 1871. 3) Parliamentary Papers 1863. 4) Civilian Assistants 1915. 5) Royal Engineers 1914. 6) List of Officers. Additionally, people have been identified from miscellaneous sources.
The site is not intended to recorded the genealogy of Ordnance Survey people, however, some relationships are recorded where Ordnance Survey 'families' have been identified.
The photograph was taken in March 1922 on the occasion of the unveiling of the stained-glass windows erected at the London Road office as a memorial to the men who fell in the Great War.
