    • James Henry Hurst was born on 28 March 1864 in Fareham, Hampshire, and baptised at St Peter and St Paul a month later. His early years were spent on Mill Road, Fareham. In the 1881 census he is listed as working as a labourer for the Ordnance Survey in St Peter Tavy. This early exposure to surveying shaped the rest of his life.

      On 25 March 1887, James enlisted in the Royal Engineers at Exeter, beginning a distinguished military career. He served as a Sapper, later rising to 2nd Corporal, Corporal, and finally Sergeant. Between 1901 and 1902 he served in the Second Boer War, earning the Queen’s South Africa Medal with clasps for Cape Colony, Orange Free State, and 1902. His conduct was recognised with a Good Conduct Medal in 1905. He was discharged in Southampton in 1908 after 21 years of service. His discharge papers describe James as “a very good surveyor” and “a good draftsman”.

      The next day, James rejoined the Ordnance Survey as a civilian employee. Over the next sixteen years he lived and worked in Southampton retiring as Superintendent on 28 March 1924, his 60th birthday.

      James married Annie Harriett Tyrrill at St John’s Church, Chelsea, in 1891. They settled in Southampton, raising their daughter Margaret at 54 Padwell Road, the family home for decades. James died at home on 23 October 1929.
      The items related to James were given to Ordnance Survey by his daughter Margaret Annie Ellen Louise Painter (nee Hurst). Who died in Southampton in 1986.
