      Died: 4 September 1916
      John Cronin was born on 5 May 1888 at Cappanagroun, Derriana, Kerry the son of Michael Cronin, a farm labourer and Nora Shea. The 1911 shows John had seven siblings including Denis M, Cornelius, Michael, and Patrick. John’s brother Denis was also in the Royal Engineer working on the Ordnance Survey.
      John enlisted into the Royal Engineers on 28 Apr 1908 in Longford, Ireland. On 1 Jan 1914 he was a Sapper, Royal Engineers working on the Ordnance Survey based at Heaton, Yorkshire. In March 1914 John was posted to West Africa.
      John entered the war in West Africa on 19 September 1914 as a Royal Engineer attached to the Nigerian Regiment; he held the temporary rank of Sergeant. Whilst serving with the Nigerian Regiment John became ill with Tuberculosis and returned to England. He was discharged from the Royal Engineers on 27 April 1915 judged physically unfit for war service. His service record documents his intention to return to his family home at Derriana, Co. Kerry after his discharge.
      Lance Corporal John Cronin, Royal Engineers died at Peamount Sanatorium, Newcastle, County Dublin on 4 September 1916. He is remembered on the Ordnance Survey War Memorials. His Commonwealth War Grave Memorial is the Brookwood 1914-1918 Memorial. He has no known grave.
